The Oskar Diethelm Library at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City is seeking an intern for the Summer or Fall 2013 semester. The Oskar Diethelm Library is a special collection devoted to the history of psychiatry. It is part of Weill Cornell Medical College’s Institute for the History of Psychiatry and includes approximately 50,000 titles in English, French, and German dealing with psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis, mesmerism, spiritualism, phrenology, witchcraft and related topics.

Journal holdings include long back runs of psychiatric journals as well as current journals dealing with the history of medicine, psychiatry and psychology. Archival holdings include the papers of numerous organizations and individuals. The internship will involve beginning a project to organize, catalog, and rehouse a collection of letters and other miscellaneous materials not part of a discrete larger collection, with the goal of creating a searchable index or database that can eventually be added to our website.

Other projects may be available as well depending on the intern’s interests. This could include processing and creating a finding aid for an unprocessed collection, scanning and creating digital images, or assisting with cataloging books. The intern will also help with other library and archives related tasks as they come up. Prospective interns should be enrolled in an advanced degree program in Archival Administration or Library and Information Studies with an interest in archives. Previous experience in library or archives preferred. Reliability and attention to detail are essential.

The internship will be during normal business hours, at least 8 hours a week preferred. The internship is unpaid but can be done for course credit. Learn more about the library.
