IT Associate, Level 1 (Provisional) – Network Administration

spsSince its inception in 2003, the School of Professional Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY SPS) has launched fourteen degrees – eight bachelor’s degrees open to students with 24 or more college credits who wish to complete their undergraduate studies, and six master’s degrees – and more programs are currently in development. CUNY SPS leads the University in developing and operating online degree programs, and trains faculty throughout CUNY in online instruction. CUNY SPS is also the home of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, which offers higher education programs for working adults and union members, and serves as a nationally-recognized center for scholarship and resources for labor, academic, and community leaders seeking a deeper understanding of labor and urban issues.

The Network Administrator is a self-motivated, hands-on IT professional. The role is responsible for administering and maintaining the advanced and high performance CUNY SPS campus communication network.

The Network Administrator works with fellow members of the CUNY SPS Office of Information Technology team to identify and implement products and services that improve our College efficiencies, system uptime, reliability, security practices, and compliance requirements for our students, faculty, and staff. The role supports the information technology staff in activities that include planning and administering new systems and services. Supports the maintenance, administration, security, and upgrading of computer systems, servers, and other systems infrastructure.

Reporting to System Administrator, the Network Administrator will:

  •  Network operational monitoring and associated issue response for the campus network connected systems, wireless access devices, and Internet connections.
  • Perform network and data center project work when assigned.
  • Review, analyze, respond, and implement network switch, router, and firewall installation, administration, and troubleshooting.
  • VLAN creation and configuration in conjunction with spanning-tree and 802.1q trunking.
  • Routing configurations, working knowledge of OSPF, HSRP and BGP peering relationship and traffic flows.
  • Data center and campus building infrastructure design and operational support.
  • Troubleshoot and configure Cisco Catalyst with VSS and Nexus series switches connected by Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE).
  • Administer network security appliances and network firewalls.
  • Maintain patches of fiber for switch uplinks comprised of multi-mode and single modes.
  • Document network infrastructure using Microsoft Visio, PDF, etc. and update internal wiki knowledge base.
  • Administer the School’s Cisco based VoIP telephony system network.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

General Duties

I.T. Associates perform moderately complex professional work in technology-related disciplines.  While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Associates work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar functions depending on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report.  Work tasks include resolving complex technology problems and serving as a technical resource.   They have considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment and may have supervisory responsibilities.

I.T. Associates should demonstrate mastery of one or more technology-related disciplines.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

2. An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate’s degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus three years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position

3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

4. A Motor Vehicle Driver’s license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This job has three levels.  To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

  • Experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash scripts or equivalent scripting languages to automate and integrate systems
  • Working knowledge of Cisco Fabric, VMware vSphere, Fiber Channel
  • Strong experience with Windows and Linux servers
  • Familiarity with encryption technologies
  • Experience with large DNS and DHCP deployments using Infoblox clustered servers across multiple network segments
  • Excellent analytical skills; good project management skills
