spsSince its inception in 2003, the School of Professional Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY SPS) has launched sixteen degrees: ten bachelor’s degrees open to students with 24 or more college credits who wish to complete their undergraduate studies, and six master’s degrees, with more programs currently in development.  CUNY SPS leads the University in developing and operating online degree programs, and trains faculty throughout CUNY in online instruction. CUNY SPS is also the home of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, which offers higher education programs for working adults and union members, and serves as a nationally-recognized center for scholarship and resources for labor, academic, and community leaders seeking a deeper understanding of labor and urban issues.

This is a temporary full-time position with the possibility of movement to a full-time position based on performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Software Engineer will serve as the user-experience lead of the Application Services Team and will be primarily responsible for the development of the School’s website. The incumbent is responsible to and receives general supervision from the Software Development

Manager and will:

  • Develop new websites, business portals and middleware applications
  • Create wireframes, templates, program-flow diagrams and ER diagrams
  • Author unit and integration tests
  • Independently collaborate with different teams
  • Administer and provide training for key end-user applications
  • Maintain a state-of-the-art knowledge of new and emerging technologies
  • Other duties as assigned by the Software Development Manager

Salary:$60,000 – $65,000

Core Competencies/Qualifications: Required Qualifications

  • An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following:
    • Seven years of full-time work experience in a web application development or related position
    • An Associate’s degree plus five years of full-time work
    • experience in a web application development or related position
    • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus
    • three years of full-time work experience in a web application development or related position
  • WordPress theme/plugin development, maintenance, and delivery experience
  • PHP 5.3+ and SQL development experience
  • Asynchronous Javascript (AJAX) and JQuery experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Javascript DOM and debugging techniques
  • ADA and W3C ARIA-compliant design experience
  • Development experience with distributed version control
  • Unit and integration test development experience
  • Some web/application server configuration and maintenance experience
  • Some Linux server and desktop administration experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Possesses strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize, establish and meet goals and milestones, including the ability to make judgment calls and to respond tactfully in all situations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies
  • Experience with:
    • WordPress hardening
    • Python and/or BASH development
    • Django, Node.js, Laravel, Yii, Drupal, and/or Kohana
    • Nginx
    • Unicorn, GUnicorn, and/or PHP-FPM
    • Continuous integration with Jenkins
    • RESTful application and API development
    • Wireframe creation
    • Standards-based feed development (eg, Atom, iCal)
    • Web microdata tagging
    • Website information architecture development
    • HTML5-specific extensions such as canvas or offline storage
    • Alternative CSS or JS frameworks such as OOCSS or CoffeeScript
    • LDAP and/or Active Directory connections and querying
