Weekend Stories Program – Paid Internship – Brooklyn Public Library

The Weekend Stories Interns will provide a six session series of preschool programs in designated branches of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) on specific dates in September, October and November of 2011.  The interns are scheduled to work at least 3 hours on each Saturday of the series, one hour for set-up, one hour for the program, and one hour for clean-up and evaluation.  All new interns must attend the training sessions scheduled for Saturday, September 17 from 1-4 PM.   All interns must be available to present programs on the following Saturdays: September 24, October 1, 15, 22, 29 and November 5 OR Sundays: September 25, October 1, 15, 22, 29, and November 5.  Interns should be willing and able to travel to branches within the BPL system.  Deadline to apply: August 26, 2011.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct storytime programs for children 3-5 years of age and their parents or caregivers.
  • Share picture books, songs, rhymes, fingerplays and other activities with families to promote the development of early literacy skills in young children.
  • Share tips and information with parents about early literacy skills and how reading with children can promote their development.
  • Gather information and surveys from participants for an evaluation of this project.
  • Set up and clean up program materials.
  • Meet with designated BPL staff mentor at least three times, either before or after the Saturday programs.
  • Report any problems to mentor or library staff overseeing the program.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with young children or knowledge of children’s literature for this age group.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility.
  • Enrollment in a graduate library or education program desirable, but not essential.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Polish, or Russian a plus.

Stipend: $100 per program & $100 to attend the training sessions.
