Fall 2011 Internship Opportunities at the Image Library/The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Image Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is looking for current college seniors and graduate students who are interested in applying for an internship during the fall 2011 semester.  Under the supervision of professional library staff, interns will gain first-hand museum visual resources experience by participating in regular departmental activities that range from research and special projects to cataloguing library holdings.

We have internship positions available assisting the Librarians with several concurrent digitization projects. We are in the process of assessing our analog collection for preservation and digitization and are looking for help with the organizing, inventorying, cleaning, remounting, and re-labeling of materials due to digitized; in addition we will also require assistance with cataloguing the material once it has been digitized and ingested into our digital asset management system.

The Image Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is responsible for cataloguing, distributing and licensing images for all staff and patron requests as well as for publication through our third-party licensors. We have an analog collection of close to 1.5 million photographs in a variety of formats from black-and-white negatives, color transparencies and slides. We are a library of images of museum-owned objects, exhibitions, galleries and the visual history of the museum since its conception in 1870. In addition to our analog collections, we have a growing digital collection of over 700,000 images that were taken by professional photographers in the museum’s Photo Studio, contractual photographers and the curatorial and conservation departments. As mentioned above, the Image Library is actively working on digitizing the analog collection; in order to do so, we are working closely with ARTstor and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

We are a very busy department and can offer a variety of work for anyone intrigued by an alternative library experience.

The fall Internship will be from SeptemberDecember 2011. Basic internship requirements would be one full day (7 hours) per week during business hours. The Library is only open Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00 and closed on the weekends.

There is no stipend, but the intern will be eligible for employee discounts at the Museum’s public restaurant, Membership Dining Room, the Museum’s retail stores, and free admission to all other New York City museums.

If interested in applying, the deadline is September 5, 2011. All materials should be compiled by the applicant, mailed or e-mailed together and include the following:
•       Resume and Cover Letter
•       Proposed begin and end dates of internship
•       Availability for an in-person interview (required) in August or early September.
