Archive & Catalogue Intern – Alliance for Young Artists & Writers

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is in search of an intern to assist in all areas of cataloguing its archives and permanent art collection. The intern will work with the Manager, External Relations and Manager of Exhibitions to devise a cataloguing system for the archives using a custom online database. The same database will be used to catalogue 500+ works in the permanent collection.

Duties include handling and organization of historic materials of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards dating back as far as 1923, digital photography of all artwork, slide and document scanning, online research, and batch uploading of data from spreadsheets. Intern will complete goals in Phase I of a two-year project.

Qualifications: Must have experience working with spreadsheets, databases and digital technologies. Applicants should have a high attention to detail and be very organized and motivated to work methodically.  The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in archive & collections management, digital photography, database logic and information systems. Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in MLS degree programs.

Other duties include retrieving supplies, running errands and providing assistance on an as-needed basis by other employees.

Dates: September – December, 2011. 2- 3 days a week.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  The Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.  Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 30 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.
