Archive Internship – Democracy Now! – Spring Semester

Background:

Composed of over 70,000 media elements, the Democracy Now! archive contains books, photographs, artifacts and audiovisual materials such as field recordings, oral histories, interviews and news footage from the 1980s to today. An integral part of daily operations and production of Democracy Now!, the archive is also used as a resource by researchers, filmmakers, artists and educators.

Internship:

The Democracy Now! Archive is looking for interns for the winter break and spring 2011 semester. The program is structured for students and individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in the field of audiovisual archiving and preservation. Interns build skills, apply them in the workplace, and are encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas along the way. The position requires a ten-week commitment and fifteen to twenty hours per week. Scheduling is flexible. Interns learn how to process books and media, catalog archival assets, and convert analog tape formats such as audio cassette and reel-to-reel tape to digital files. Responsibilities include cataloging incoming video created by Democracy Now! producers and other independent media and news organizations.

Other tasks include adding metadata to DN! content on Internet Archive (archive.org), shelving tapes and books and producing labels. Through their efforts, interns are exposed to many aspects of the production and archiving work flow. Ideal candidates are able to work independently and have an interest in current events, archives, and preservation. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro and cataloging (especially PBCore 2.0) a plus but not necessary. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone planning to pursue a career in media archives, information / library science, television news, or independent journalism.
