Summer Paid Internship at the Union League Club Library. Founded in 1863 as supporters for President Lincoln and the Union forces of the Civil War, The Union League Club of New York is celebrating our 150th anniversary. The current club house was built in 1931 and includes a two story library that houses over 19,000 volumes. Much of our collection is quite old and is in need of cleaning and conservation. We are looking for four paid interns for an estimated 4 week overhaul of our library. The project will consist of 2 teams of 2, cleaning every book and shelf in the stacks, then rearranging them in correct Dewey location and appropriate spacing. While handling each book, care must be taken to cause no further damage, and a list of books in need of conservation will be kept. This will be dusty and careful work, but is a vital library operation in preserving our collection for future generations.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in (or recent graduate of) a Masters of Information and Library Science program accredited by the American Library Association preferred.
- Organizational skills with the Dewey decimal system.
- The ability to work in dusty conditions and retrieve books from high shelves.
Salary and Start Date
- July 22nd – August 16th (some weeks will be partial due to club events)
- 10 am – 4 pm, M-F (6 hours a day includes a 30minute paid lunch break)
- $10/hr. + Free lunch from Chef Loughhead’s kitchen (quite possibly the best perk)
This 4 week project will provide more hours of experience working in a library than most semester long internships.
