New York City Board of Correction (BOC) is seeking 4-6 Library Science Interns

bocLocated in downtown Manhattan,  the Board of Correction (BOC) is a city agency that establishes and ensures compliance with minimum standards regulating conditions of confinement and correctional health and mental health care in all City correctional facilities. The Board monitors conditions in the City’s jails, investigates serious incidents, evaluates the performance of the Department of Correction, reviews inmate and employee grievances, and makes recommendations in critical areas of correctional planning. The BOC has been located in its current office for decades, and has undergone waves of technology and record-keeping changes over the years. Many, if not most, of its historical documents are currently stored in original paper form in our current space.

The BOC has an opportunity for college student and graduate student volunteers to help archive historical records that will be available to future generations, and also help plan and execute the way in which the BOC categorizes, codes, digitizes, and stores the entire collection of documents for an impending move to a new, smaller, office space. This internship is ongoing. Interns will work in teams under the supervision of BOC staff familiar with the documents and needs of the agency. Interns will each work a minimum of 120 hours. Interns may be asked to stay on for additional time, depending on need.

Library Science majors are preferred. Cataloging, metadata, digital archiving and database knowledge and experience preferred. Applicants should be enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library Science program and have completed basic coursework in cataloging. Email cover letter, resume, and transcript to amasters@boc.nyc.gov and chpark@boc.nyc.gov with the subject line “BOC LIBRARIAN INTERN APPLICATION.” Applications without that subject line will not be reviewed.
