MIS/IT Associate (Software Engineer) – School of Professional Studies (CUNY)

spsSince its inception in 2003, the School of Professional Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY SPS) has launched fifteen degrees: nine bachelor’s degrees open to students with 24 or more college credits who wish to complete their undergraduate studies, and six master’s degrees, with more programs currently in development.

CUNY SPS leads the University in developing and operating online degree programs, and trains faculty throughout CUNY in online instruction. CUNY SPS is also the home of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, which offers higher education programs for working adults and union members, and serves as a nationally-recognized center for scholarship and resources for labor, academic, and community leaders seeking a deeper understanding of labor and urban issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Software Engineer will serve as the user-experience lead of the Application Services Team and will be primarily responsible for the development and ongoing maintenance of The School’s website. The incumbent reports to the Software Development Manager and will:

  • Develop new websites, business portals and middleware applications
  • Configure web and application servers for optimal performance and availability
  • Perform regular audits and analyses of application, process, host, and network logs and pro-actively ameliorate emerging security and performance threats
  • Maintain existing software assets by developing automated solutions for deployments and upgrades
  • Perform project planning, requirements gathering and cost analyses
  • Create wireframes, templates, program-flow diagrams and ER diagrams
  • Author automated unit and integration tests
  • Work with consultants to integrate and oversee third-party development
  • Administer and provide training for key end-user applications
  • Lead application review and optimization sessions
  • Maintain a state-of-the-art knowledge of new and emerging technologies
  • Work closely with, and support, the Marketing and Communications department which is the institutional “owner” of the School’s website
  • Other duties as assigned by the Software Development Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following:

  • seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position
  • an Associate’s degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position
  • a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus four years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position
  • Four years experience as a front-end web developer and user-experience designer in a team environment using dynamic technologies such as PHP, Python, Ruby on Rails and Javascript
  • Four years experience with Javascript and JQuery in asynchronous client-side applications including comprehensive knowledge of the DOM and JQuery debugging practices
  • Three years experience with distributed version control tools such as Git
  • Two years experience developing websites using a modern CMS such as WordPress, Drupal 7+ or Joomla
  • Two years experience developing websites using a modern framework such as Django, Node.js, Laravel, Yii or Kohana; Yii and Django experience are a plus
  • Two years experience configuring and maintaining web and application servers such as PHP-FPM, Unicorn, GUnicorn, Apache2 and NGINX
  • Experience developing WordPress themes and/or plugins
  • Experience developing ADA and W3C ARIA-compliant web applications
  • Experience with all phases of the software development life cycle
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests using such tools as PHPUnit, QUnit, Unittest and Selenium
  • Experience writing orchestration scripts to automate such regular processes as tests, builds, configuration operations and deployments
  • Experience developing RESTful applications and AJAX API’s
  • Experience using data analysis to derive meaningful interpretations of application usage patterns and drive future development
  • Comfortability with Debian-style Linux administration including package installation and the configuration of services
  • Can work equally well in a group or alone
  • Possesses strong oral and written communication skills
  • Is able to prioritize, establish and meet goals and milestones,  including the ability to make judgment calls and to respond tactfully in all situations

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience hardening WordPress installations and developing zero-downtime maintenance scripts

• Experience creating wireframes and optimizing images and video forthe web

• Experience developing website information architectures (IA) from end-user requirements; university or educational website IA’s are a major plus

• Experience with modern virtualization and containerization tools such as KVM, LXC, Docker and Vagrant

• Experience using SaltStack for systems orchestration

• Experience using HTML5 specific-extensions such as canvas or offline storage

• Experience with alternate CSS or JS frameworks such as OOCSS or CoffeeScript

• Experience developing RSS/Atom, iCal and other standards-based data feeds

• Experience with back-end and middleware scripting using Python, Perl, BASH, SQL, awk, sed and/or Windows Powershell

• Experience hosting websites on modern cloud providers

• Experience using establishing connections to and interacting with LDAP databases; Active Directory a plus

• Experience working in both Agile and waterfall-style development projects

• Experience integrating microdata tagging into web applications

 

Salary:$60,000 – $75,000
