Statistical Data Research Assistant – Leonard Lief Library, Lehman College

lehmanUnder the guidance of the principal investigators, the Statistical Data Research Assistant uses SPSS software to code and analyze test data collected in the PSC-CUNY Research Award-funded study “The Effect of Flipped Classroom Information Literacy Instruction on Student Learning.” During this project, multiple choice and short-answer pre- and post-tests were given to students in classes conducted with either flipped or lecture methodology with the goal of assessing learning in each type of class.

Required qualifications:

The research assistant:

  • is proficient in SPSS software to code, tabulate, analyze and validate data;
  • is proficient in office productivity software (MS Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • is able to follow oral and written instructions;
  • is self motivated, organized and detail-oriented;
  • is able meet deadlines and make progress without direct supervision;
  • is able to handle and protect confidential data.

 Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience analyzing data in SPSS as part of social science research project.
  • Significant coursework in statistics.
  • Significant graduate coursework in the social sciences, especially sociology, library and information sciences, education, or instructional technology.
  • has completed basic training in the protection of human subjects (available at:


  • Enter data (responses to multiple choice and short answer tests) in SPSS according to established code tables.
  • Assist in developing statistically valid research queries to analyze data in SPSS in collaboration with principal investigators.
  • Produce tables and charts, write analytical summaries of research results.


  • Wages: $25-30/hour, commensurate with experience.
  • 10-19 hours per week (for a total of approximately 70 hours).
  • On site at the Leonard Lief Library, Lehman College, Bronx, with some off-site work possible.
  • Work to be performed October 15 – December 15, 2015.
