General Description:

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Educational Technology, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Multimedia Specialist will implement complex technical programs and/or projects to support faculty & students depending on the needs of the Educational Technology Office (EdTech.) The Multimedia Specialist will:

1.Support the enhancement and expansion of Virtual HALC (Hostos Academic Learning Center)

2.Support the creation of a Hostos Media Repository

3.Support the development of a Learning Styles Inventory System

4.Support other EdTech projects as determined by the Coordinator of Educational Technology

Other Duties:

• Act as a liaison between the Hostos Academic Learning Center (HALC) and the Office of Educational Technology (EdTech)

• Implement innovative pedagogical applications of the latest computer, mobile and digital media technologies.

• Develop educational and tutorial websites, interactive learning modules, multimedia presentations, video, audio and print educational media.

• Provide one-to-one guidance to professors and instructors in Blackboard, distance learning, online applications, mobile technology and digital and print media use in the classroom across all disciplines in a professional setting.

• Keep abreast of the latest hardware and software developments and adapt them for pedagogical uses across disciplines.

• Modify existing applications as required.

Salary:$35,000 – $55,000

Core Competencies/Qualifications:

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of full time work experience in computing or a related field. A master’s degree in computer science or a related field is a plus.

• Proven ability to keep abreast of the latest hardware and software developments and the ability to adapt them for pedagogical uses across disciplines.

• Proven track record of managing multiple projects in a dynamic team-oriented environment.

• In-depth experience in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, or related video editing software.

• In-depth experience programming in Java, .NET, ASP, PHP.

• Strong understanding of database design (MySQL, MS SQL).

• Strong understanding of HTML, XHTML, XML, JavaScript, AJAX, JQUERY, and Internet standards and protocols.

• Experience with virtual environments (Second Life), and gamification is a plus.

Adjunct Position(s) at City Tech Library

The City Tech library anticipates a need for instructors for its 3-credit semester-long undergraduate course LIB 1201, Research and Documentation for the Information Age. We seek seasoned information literacy champions with demonstrated instruction expertise and experience. An ALA-accredited MLS is required; additional graduate degree desired.  For appointment as assistant professor the second master’s is required.

The course description is as follows:

In this course students will explore issues in research and documentation for text (in print and online), images, sound and multimedia. We will investigate where information comes from and how it is organized in both traditional and emerging media.  Students will examine the ethics of information use and determine how to critically evaluate sources.  Throughout the course, students will create and present research and documentation projects using traditional and emerging media and technologies.

Substitute Technical Services/Electronic Resources Librarian – City Tech

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will report to the library’s director of technical services and oversee cataloging, serials, and electronic resources operations.  She or he will be responsible for some original cataloging, oversee vendor-ready cataloging, and manage a small number of print journals and continuations, with supervision of support staff and other duties as assigned.

This librarian will maintain timely, accurate data about these resources in systems such as link resolver (SFX), integrated library system (Aleph 500), OCLC Connexion, ejournal portal (Serials Solutions), and the library website (Drupal).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution. Two years of technical services and/or electronic resources experience, preferably in an academic or research library, and excellent communication skills.  Appointment is at the lecturer or assistant professor level.  For appointment as an assistant professor a second master’s is required.

Preferred: Experience with the following = SFX or another link resolver; Aleph 500 or another integrated library system; vendors and content providers, including subscription agents, publishers, and library consortia; MarcEdit; Serials Solutions; and Drupal.  Also proficiency with spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel.

The Position

Assist the Communications Department with the digitization of the audiovisual collection of the Lindesmith Library.  The Lindesmith Library is one of the world?s leading resources for scientific information on drug policy as well as an outstanding source of information on drug policy reform. The collection of contemporary and historical articles, books, and films is unmatched, and the services of the library play a critical role in advancing an honest and informed public discourse about drug issues.

The Lindesmith Library was founded in 1995 and named after Professor Alfred Lindesmith of Indiana University, the first prominent scholar in the U.S. to challenge conventional thinking about drugs, addiction, and drug policy. The collection contains more than 15,000 books, audio recordings, articles, and videos focusing on drugs and drug policy from economic, criminal justice, public health and other perspectives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Utilize hardware and software to create digital copies of VHS and audio cassette tapes
  • Create and refine metadata for library records of video and audio collection

Based in DPA’s New York City headquarters, the Digitization Intern will be part of DPA?s Communications team and report to the Managing Director of Communications.  One day of training on a Tuesday will be necessary.

Qualifications

At least one completed semester at an accredited library and information science program OR media program is required.  Previous cataloging experience, library experience, digitization experience, and/or experience in substance abuse related work are pluses.   The ideal intern will be highly organized, have a good sense of humor, be able to work with minimum supervision, and be able to commit two days a week until December 2011.  In return, the volunteer will have the chance to work with a highly skilled and fun team of committed people.

Compensation

This is an unpaid internship. Interns are offered a modest travel stipend.

Global Education Intern, Sesame Workshop

The Global Education department at Sesame Workshop is seeking an intern to assist a Director and Content Specialist on international co-productions of Sesame Street for the Fall 2011 semester. Responsibilities include reviewing scripts and outreach materials for educational content, reviewing research materials, translations, organizing and tracking information about content and logistics for the projects, assisting in coordinating international calls and meetings, and administrative tasks as needed. The intern will have the opportunity to attend script reviews, education, research, and outreach meetings, project planning meetings, as well as internal cross-departmental meetings.
